P0401: Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) Flow Insufficient
The EGR system is not flowing enough exhaust back into the engine.
Severity: 2 of 4
Usually safe to drive. You might hear engine knock under load, which over time can harm the engine. Avoid heavy towing and fix it soon.
Estimate range covers the repairs listed below; see the cost breakdown. A flashing check engine light, a hot temperature gauge, or brakes that feel different mean stop driving and get help.
What P0401 means
The EGR system sends a small amount of exhaust back into the intake to lower combustion temperatures and reduce nitrogen oxide emissions. P0401 means the flow is lower than expected.
Carbon buildup is the usual reason.
EGR flow is checked in different ways depending on the vehicle. Some engines watch intake manifold pressure change when the EGR valve opens. Others use a dedicated sensor to measure flow. Either way, P0401 means the expected change did not happen.
Many newer gasoline engines achieve some EGR effect through valve timing instead of a separate valve, so P0401 is more common on older designs and on diesels.
Common causes (cheapest likely first)
- Carbon clogged EGR passages. Most common.
- Stuck EGR valve. Carbon or failure.
- Faulty EGR sensor. Bad reading.
- Vacuum hose problem. On vacuum operated systems.
Symptoms
- Engine knock or pinging
- Failed emissions test
- Check engine light
- Rough idle if the valve sticks open (a different but related problem)
DIY difficulty: Moderate
Cleaning the valve and passages can work but may be tedious.
Tools: OBD-II scanner, Carbon cleaner, Scraper, Socket set
Cleaning EGR passages
- Remove the EGR valve per your service manual and inspect for carbon.
- Scrape loose deposits and use a carbon cleaner rated for engine parts.
- On some engines, carbon builds in passages inside the intake manifold, which may require removal.
- Replace gaskets when reinstalling.
Estimated repair cost
This is an estimate, built from typical parts price ranges plus labor hours times an assumed shop rate of $110 to $190 per hour. Actual prices vary by vehicle, region, and shop. Diagnosis fees are often extra.
| Repair | Parts | Labor | Estimate (low / high) |
|---|---|---|---|
| EGR valve cleaning | $10 to $30 | 1.0 to 2.5 h | $10 + 1.0 × $110 = $120 $30 + 2.5 × $190 = $505 |
| EGR valve | $100 to $450 | 0.5 to 2.0 h | $100 + 0.5 × $110 = $155 $450 + 2.0 × $190 = $830 |

Check for recalls
Before paying for a repair, enter your VIN in the NHTSA recall lookup. Emissions parts may also be covered by a federal emissions warranty; check your warranty booklet.
FAQ
Can P0401 cause knock?
Yes. Higher combustion temperatures can cause knock.
Should I clean or replace?
Try cleaning first when the valve still moves.
Can I block off the EGR valve?
No. Disabling emissions equipment is illegal in the US and will fail inspection.
Will an EGR fault hurt fuel economy?
Sometimes slightly, and the knocking it causes can reduce performance.
