Polestar check engine codes

Overview

This brand builds fully electric vehicles. There is no gasoline engine, so the OBD-II engine and emissions codes on FixOrPark (misfires, catalytic converters, EVAP, oxygen sensors) do not apply. EVs still show warning lights, and some of them mean stop now.

Codes notably common on Polestar

Not applicable: this brand builds electric vehicles without gasoline engines.

Why EVs do not use these codes

Engine codes come from systems an EV does not have: spark plugs, fuel injectors, exhaust, catalytic converters, and fuel vapor storage. EV faults are reported through the vehicle's own screens and manufacturer specific codes, usually read by the service center.

Common EV warnings and what to do

The 12 volt battery problem

Every EV still has a small low voltage battery that powers the computers, door locks, and the contactors that connect the main battery. When it weakens, an EV can show a cascade of unrelated warnings, refuse to go into drive, or fail to wake up even with a full main battery. A weak 12 volt battery is a common cause of mysterious EV warnings. Many EVs have a specific jump or service procedure; follow the owner manual rather than guessing.

Maintenance basics

EVs need less routine maintenance than gasoline cars, but tires, brakes, cabin filters, coolant for the battery thermal system, and the 12 volt battery still need attention.
