Volkswagen check engine codes
Overview
Volkswagen turbocharged gasoline engines commonly set lean codes from PCV failures, underboost from diverter valve or wastegate issues, and misfires from coils and carbon buildup.
Codes notably common on Volkswagen
- P0299 Turbocharger or Supercharger Underboost · Volkswagen notes
- P0171 System Too Lean (Bank 1) · Volkswagen notes
- P0300 Random or Multiple Cylinder Misfire Detected · Volkswagen notes
- P0301 Cylinder 1 Misfire Detected
- P0420 Catalyst System Efficiency Below Threshold (Bank 1)
- P0401 Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) Flow Insufficient · Volkswagen notes
Volkswagen specific notes
- VW service information describes testing the crankcase breather (PCV) valve on 2.0 liter TSI engines; a torn diaphragm causes lean running and a whistle.
- Direct injection engines can build intake valve carbon over time; walnut blasting is a common cleaning method.
- Diesel TDI engines use EGR heavily, so EGR flow codes are more common on them than on gasoline engines.
