BMW check engine codes
Overview
BMW engines are well known for vacuum leaks from aging plastic and rubber parts, coil failures, and cooling system wear. Turbocharged models add boost related codes.
Codes notably common on BMW
BMW specific notes
- VANOS (variable valve timing) faults usually set their own camshaft timing codes rather than the 20 codes here, but a VANOS problem can contribute to rough running. Diagnose with a scan tool that reads BMW specific codes.
- BMW uses pressure controlled crankcase ventilation valves. BMW service information notes that a faulty valve can cause oil consumption and seal damage, and a torn diaphragm can let in unmetered air, a known cause of lean codes.
- On 2007 to 2010 N54 twin turbo models, BMW extended emissions warranty coverage to 8 years or 82,000 miles for turbocharger failures caused by a wastegate defect. BMW notes that a slight rattle is normal; a repeated clanking on deceleration is the documented complaint.
- Thermostats and electric water pumps are wear items on many BMW engines; a failed thermostat can set P0128.
